We left Majdanek and headed for Zamosc, Poland in search of evidence of our ancestors. On the way we looked for a Jewish cemetary in a different town, Janow-Lubelski. Alex, our guide, asked a number of people on the street for directions to the Jewish cemetary or whatever is left of it. We finally got good directions from a very helpful and very old guy who said in Polish: "Those f*****g Communists, they destroyed everything", referring to the time before Poland became independent and the Soviet Union still existed. We went to the site and there was no evidence that the empty field had ever been a cemetary.
From Janow we went to Zamosc, Poland where our Maternal Great Grandparents had lived. Zamosc is a very charming town which has a large town square with many restaurants and great old architecture. We stayed two nights in a somewhat spartan hotel which gave of Soviet era vibrations. It had air conditioning but no elevator. Here are Zamosc photos and some of my hotel room, our Great Grandparents residence, and some Polish storks in their nest.
